Artwork Description
Shibusa is a body of work grounded in restraint, balance, and quiet presence.
Rooted in the Japanese aesthetic principle of shibui, the images in this series favour understatement over display — revealing their depth slowly, through tone, structure, and detail rather than spectacle.
Shibusa embraces seven core qualities: simplicity, implicit meaning, modesty, silence, naturalness, everydayness, and imperfection.
These ideas shape not only the subject matter, but the way each image is composed, processed, and ultimately experienced.
Although the photographs appear effortless and unforced, each work is the result of a deliberate and highly controlled process. Composition, tonal balance, and colour have been meticulously refined to create images that feel calm, resolved, and quietly confident.
The result is work that invites prolonged viewing. These photographs do not demand attention — they hold it.
They are contemplative rather than dramatic, offering a sense of stillness while retaining a subtle vitality and presence.
Shibusa works are designed to live with you — in domestic or professional interiors — revealing more over time rather than overwhelming at first glance.
